— The ‘Cortex’ series is inspired by the shells and beetles that Pierre Bonnefille studied and analyzed before executing his series of twelve unique boxes.

— Observing the relationship between material, colour and light on the surface of the beetle’s shell, Pierre Bonnefille re-created this velvety and silky appearance by researching the elaborate textures with great care.

​

— Pierre Bonnefille equally refers to the shimmering colours of different beetle shells that he finds in nature, and reinvents his findings through the association of metallic powders and natural pigments, a colour palette specially conceived for this series.

​

— The ‘Cortex’ series is also the artist’s reflection on the shell as a jewellery box, and re-transcription, through the material, of an envelope destined to conserve the most precious objects.
